Department of Jazz and Popular Music

At the Jazz and Popular Music module of the Performing Arts study program, considerable attention is dedicated to the development of artistic capacities. The aim is to form music personalities of jazz singer, jazz trumpeter, jazz trombonist, jazz drummer, jazz pianist, jazz guitarist, jazz saxophonist and jazz double bass player, capable of achieving high professional level in music performance.

Along with capabilities for individual artistic activity and work in ensembles, students gain competencies for music teaching in music schools and work in cultural institutions.

Study program requirements are precisely set, while nevertheless allowing free development of individual programs in accordance with capabilities of each student.  Gradual increase in program requirements enables continual development of interpretative and technical capacities of students.

Learning outcomes include acquiring skills of improvisation, practicing and rehearsing, playing in ensembles, skills of artistic expression and performance in public, understanding of repertoire and music material, as well as skills of development and realization of teaching jazz singing and jazz instruments, by use of current teaching principles and methods.

The title acquired upon completing master academic studies in Jazz and Popular Music module is Master of Music.

Since the opening of the Department of Jazz and Popular Music in 2012, numerous jazz artists have been invited as visiting professors, including Jonathan Kreisberg, Bojan Zulfikarpašić, Michele Hendricks, Simon Rigter, Stjepko Gut, Christine and Ingrid Jensen.
