Marija Jokanović, MMUs

Professor in the artistic field of Violin, retired

Marija-Maya Jokanović was born into a family of musicians in Belgrade, where she acquired her initial music education. Her formal education was continued at the “P.I.Tchaikovsky” Conservatory in Moscow where she received both her undergraduate and graduate degrees in the class of professor Semion Snitkovsky in the department chaired by David Oistrach. At the Chigiana Academy in Siena she completed a master course with maestro Franco Gulli.

At the International Competition “Jan Sibelius” in Helsinki in 1980 she received a “Diplome d’honneur”. Maya Jokanović frequently performed in concert halls throughout former Yugoslavia and has toured music centers all over Europe and Australia. She participated in numerous music festivals in Serbia, Croatia, Slovakia, Italy, Macedonia, Greece and Netherlands.

She played with S. Snitkovsky, P. Vernikov, P. Toso, B. Canino, P. L. Graf, H. Ferster and performed as soloist with the Philharmonic Orchestras of Belgrade, Zagreb, Moravia, Sarajevo, Skoplje, with Dubrovnik Festival Orchestra, Padua Chamber Orchestra, Milano Classica Orchestra…
From 1983 to 1985 she was a soloist and member of the Orchestra da Padua e del Veneto. In this period she also performed with harpsichord player Lina Romano and made a recording for PGP-RTB.
Maya Jokanović is a professor at the International Academy of Music in Novara (Italy) from 1989 to 2002. Since 1990 she is a professor at the Faculty of Music in Belgrade.

In 2012 Maya Jokanović received a Large Plaque of the University of Art in Belgrade for special merits and contribution to the development of the Faculty of Music and the University of Arts in Belgrade.
